“Highly satisfied! I cannot recommend Cindy Turner and the SBDC enough!”

Dr. Erik Breitling

BACKGROUND
In 2012, after working as a dispensing audiologist, Dr. Erik Breitling came to the Contra Costa SBDC to pursue his dream of opening a private practice that prioritized patient care. In 2014, he opened Lamorinda Audiology, providing comprehensive auditory diagnostic tests, hearing aid and rehabilitation services as well as evaluations and fittings for anyone in need of hearing protection.

CHALLENGES
Erik's path was one many startups face. He had the skills as an audiologist, but needed to learn basic business practices, how to do research to identify a good location to serve his target market, and how to secure a loan to start the business on a sustainable path.

ACTIONS
Erik attended a number of free workshops and worked with a business advisor to conduct market research and identify a good location for the business. Throughout 2013, business advisors helped him validate his business model and implement a business plan. He continued working with the Contra Costa SBDC into 2014 which helped him secure a $100,000 loan for equipment and working capital.

RESULTS
The relationship with the Contra Costa SBDC helped Erik launch Lamorinda Audiology in late 2014, with an emphasis on customizing products, services and information for each patient's specific needs. Since then, his diligent work and relationship with the SBDC has helped him double the revenue and patient base year over year.
